Impact of Social Media on Journalists
Social media has grown to be such an important aspect of almost every individuals life. Social media has its fait share of pros and cons, this goes for casual users and professionals. The benefits that social media has brought to professions such as marketing, advertising, sells, and business are not arguable. Social media allows for these professions to easily connect with a world-wide audience to further their success's. However, that is simply not the case for journalism.
The impact of social media is quite heavy for all professional journalists. The ability for users to publish content about anything at anytime allows them to feel like a "reporter". This has a negative affect on the professional journalists that want to share credible news and stories via social media. Now a days, anyone can capture a situation that looks to be news worthy on their smartphone and share it with the world in a matter of seconds. This lessens the credibility of news stories and the work that journalists put in to providing such news to an audience. This then leaves it up to the reader to distinguish if the difference between actual news and the work of an amateur.
These negative impacts social media has on journalists is not necessarily the fault of anyone, but it does make the job of a reporter/ journalists harder to be known as credible sources for accurate information. This then leads into the aspect of "fake news". While the freedom of social media, specially in America, is great , it also lacks the ability to police content and sources that are published. It is my opinion that social media should have its own set of laws to protect the integrity of news stories and professional journalists. Social media has been said to be the fourth branch of the government simply from the influence it has over its audiences. I believe there should be a non-bias system that can monitor the credibility of information published to the world.
